On 14 February the Echo reported that 'The ice at Pittville Lake is in a splendid condition. Hot refreshments, including bovril, are provided at the boathouse. The gardens will be illuminated at night by two large Wells lights, and will be kept open till ten o’clock, so that tradesmen and their assistants will be able to share in the pleasure afforded'.

The Chronicle noted, with a nonchalance unknown today, that 'some enthusiasts had a cold douche,
one or two of them being immersed up to their necks'.
