He was ordained Deacon in 1936, and Priest (Chelmsford) in 1937.

He was licensed Curate of St Paul’s, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex 1936-8, becoming Curate of St Paul’s, Cheltenham 1938-40; when in Cheltenham he lived at 18 Anlaby Court, Evesham Road at first, moving to 40 Clarence Square by the time he left.

In 1940 he became an Honorary Chaplain to the Forces and Curate-in-Charge at St James’s Church, Stratford-on-Avon, though he remained there only a year. From 1941 until 1944 he also served as Deputation Secretary (West of England) for Barnardo’s Homes, when he was appointed Curate of Tetbury, where he remained until 1948, though in 1946 he was said to be leaving to take over the living of Slad with Uplands, near Stroud.
