Lifestory: John Croft Bridges Warwick used to visit his uncle in Cheltenham, and in time inherited his house in Pittville Lawn; but he did not enjoy clerical office in Cheltenham. Warwick was born in Chesterton, Cambridgeshire (baptised in 1836) the elder son of William Atkinson Warwick, of Colchester, and his wife Elizabeth (née Croft); as his full name he normally used John Croft Bridges Warwick Warwick. He was educated at the Royal Grammar School in Colchester, and matriculated at Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1855, BA 1859, MA 1863.

Entering holy orders, he was ordained Deacon in 1861, and Priest (both Peterborough) in 1862. In 1861 he was licensed Curate of St Peter’s with Upton, Northampton, and in 1864 he married Marian, second daughter of Dr John B. Bryan, FRCS, of Northampton. He remained at St Peter’s in Northampton until appointed Rector of Astley Abbots, Shropshire in 1871.

In the early 1860s he often visited his great-uncle Richard Warwick and his family at Wyddrington House (now 55 Pittville Lawn), Pittville. When his great-uncle died the property passed to his father, and Warwick stayed or lived there at times throughout the mid 1860s. By 1869 he had inherited the property itself and principally leased it out, though he was listed as the principal occupier in 1909; he still owned the house at the time of its sale in 1920 to long-standing occupants the Misses Whateley.

After he left Astley Abbots in 1905 he lived his later years at Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire, where he died in 1931, at the age of ninety-five. His wealth at death was declared as just under £2,150.
