John Deane Freeman was born at Castlecor, Mallow, Co. Cork, in 1794, and after attending Trinity College in Dublin he was ordained in England, officiating for many years at Yealand Conyers in Lancashire. He was the youngest son of Edward Deane Freeman Esq. (formerly Deane), High Sheriff of Cork in 1784, and his wife Mary (née Plummer), of Co. Limerick. In 1810, aged sixteen, he entered Trinity College, Dublin, BA 1814, MA 1840; the Freemans had been at Castlecor since the seventeenth century, but eventually lost their estates in seven counties through the Encumbered Estate court. He qualified as a Magistrate for Co. Cork in 1821. Freeman took holy orders quite late, in 1838, when he was ordained Deacon (Chester) in 1838; he was appointed Curate of the Chapel in Yealand Conyers, Lancashire. Later that year he married Anne, daughter of Revd. James Carter Green, of North Grimstone, Yorkshire, at St Leonards on Sea, Sussex. In 1840 he was appointed one of the Chaplains to Viscount Donvaile. In 1848 the Revd. Freeman (incorrectly listed as “Rev. J. P. Freeman”) stayed, presumably as a guest, at the house of his wife’s brother, Major John Hailes, 15 (now 67) Pittville Lawn, in Cheltenham; while he was there he took out a subscription permitting him to take the waters at the Pittville Pump Room for a fortnight. Freeman had officiated at the marriage of John Hailes, and also at that of his brother Augustus. Freeman died at the Vicarage, Yealand Conyers in mid 1854, at the age of sixty, after a short illness. He was buried in the village churchyard. ▶Moved to Pittville from: Yealand Conyers, Lancashire Moved from Pittville to: Yealand Conyers, Lancashire ▶Date of death: 26 June 1854 Place of death: Yealand Conyers, Lancashire ▶Date of burial: Place of burial: ▶Notes: ID: 19314 Contributor(s): John Simpson
