John Price was born in Ruthin, Denbighshire, in 1846, the son of farmer Samuel Price, and his wife Elizabeth. At the time of the 1851 and 1861 censuses he lived with his family in Denbighshire and Liverpool, respectively. By 1871 Samuel Price, a widower, had retired from work as a miller, and his son John, a commercial clerk, still lived with him.. But Price decided in the late 1870s that he would be trained for the clergy, and enrolled at St Bee’s theological college. Two years later, in 1880, he was ordained Deacon by the Bishop of Chester. At that point he was licensed Curate of St Catherine’s Church in Wigan. In 1881 he became a Priest ( Liverpool), and took up a curacy at St Paul’s Church, Newport, Monmouthshire. He stayed there for four years, before accepting the post of Curate of Porthkerry with Barry, in the Llandaff diocese. In 1893 he married Louisa Lydia, daughter of James Robert Wallis, formerly of Calcutta, at St Woolos Church in Newport; they did not have any children. He was well known in the area of Barry, and sat on the School Board for the region, from which he retired in 1895. Five years later he became the Vicar of Whitson and Goldcliff, near Newport in Monmouthshire, becoming the High Sheriff of Monmouthshire’s Chaplain by 1907. Price had retired by the time of the 1921 census, when, aged seventy-five, he and his wife were visiting Flora Beatrice Simmons at 15 Pittville Villas (now 38 Prestbury Road). This seems to have been just a passing visit. On the morning of 30 March 1925 the Revd. Price died at the home of his nephew Y. Wern, Peterson-super-Ely, Glamorganshire. Late Vicar. His funeral was held at Newport cemetery. ▶Moved to Pittville from: (visitor) Moved from Pittville to: (visitor) ▶Date of death: 30 March 1925 Place of death: Peterson-super-Ely, Glamorganshire ▶Date of burial: Place of burial: ▶Notes: Crockford 1895 ID: 20023 Contributor(s): John Simpson
