Lifestory: The Revd. Granville Wheler Stuart Menteath was well-born and well-connected in society, spending much of his early career in Cheltenham, absent from his parish. He was born in 1811 in Dumfries, the seventh son of Sir Charles Granville Stuart Menteath, 1st Bart., and his wife Ludivina (née Loughnan). He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford in 1828, BA 1832, MA 1835.

Menteath was ordained Deacon (Lincoln) in 1834, and in the same year was appointed Domestic Chaplain to the Earl of Caithness in 1834. He was priested (Lincoln) in 1835. In 1837 he married Jane, second daughter of the Revd. Edward Thorold, Rector of Hougham-cum-Marston, Lincolnshire (and grand-daughter to Sir John Thorold Bart., of Syston Park). He was presented, with his father, to the Queen at a royal levee in 1839 by the Hon. Fox Maule, on the occasion of his father’s baronetcy.

In 1843 he accepted the vicarage of Rauceby, Lincolnshire from his wife’s cousin Sir John Charles Thorold, 11th Bart., remaining there until 1854. However he lived for much of this time in Cheltenham, in 1847 at 16 Imperial Square and nearby 10 Royal Crescent, and in 1849 at 5 Pittville Parade (now 10 Evesham Road); his mother Ludivina died in Cheltenham in 1852. In 1854 he was installed as Vicar of Hascombe, near Godalming, Surrey, where he remained until 1860, and then as Perpetual Curate of Grazeley in Berkshire 1861-8, where he was also Chaplain to the Earl of Mar, and finally as Vicar of Morcot, Rutland 1868-72, on the presentation of his mother-in-law Mrs Mary Thorold.

Stuart-Menteath died at home in Leamington Spa in 1888, at the age of seventy-five. His personal wealth at death was sworn at just over £7,335.
