Lifestory: Although he worked mainly in the north of England, John Gaitskell (also Gaitskill) died in Cheltenham. He was born in Egremont, Cumberland, in 1800, the son and heir of William Gaitskill, silk merchant, of Egremont, Cumberland, and his wife Mary. Gaitskell attended St Bees School, and matriculated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge in 1820,  BA 1824. He was ordained Deacon in 1826, and Priest (both Lincoln) in 1827.

In 1826 he was licensed Curate of Creeton with Counthorpe, Lincolnshire, moving to Ashby Puerorum, Lincolnshire in 1827, and in the same year became Curate of Gosforth, Cumberland. He was living at Yeorton, Cumberland in 1830 when he married Jane, third daughter of the Revd. John Hale, Rector of Holton-cum-Beckering, and Bristlingthorpe, Lincolnshire. He served as Curate of Leverton, Lincolnshire from 1834-35, and was instituted Rector of North and South Leverton in 1835; he remained in the village until 1853.

Gaitskell died in Cheltenham in 1853, at the age of fifty-three, and where he was buried at the New Burial Ground in the High Street. The Cheltenham Annuaire records him at 11 Pittville Parade (now 22 Evesham Road), Pittville, Cheltenham in 1855, but this clearly refers to his wife Jane, who lived there until 1859.
