Lifestory: Charles George Ledger served as a Curate of St Mary’s, Cheltenham in the late 1890s; he was also a keen lepidopterist. Ledger was born in Norwood, Surrey, in 1858, the fourth son of John Ledger, victualler, of Upper Norwood, Surrey, and his wife and cousin Eliza, daughter of Horton Ledger. He was brought up and went to school in the Croydon area before matriculating at Wadham College, Oxford in 1878, BA 1882.

Ledger was ordained Deacon in 1882, Priest (both London) in 1883. In 1882 he was licensed Curate of St Matthew, West Hammersmith, and in 1883 married Isabel Mary, only child of the Revd. G. H. Kirwood, Vicar of St Martin’s, Hereford; they had six sons and two daughters. They moved in 1884 when Ledger took up an appointment as Curate of Wallington, Surrey.

After this he was licensed Curate of St Martin’s, Hereford 1886-94 (his father-in-law was the Vicar of St Martin’s; he also worked as a schoolmaster while at Hereford), and then Curate of St Mary’s, Cheltenham 1894-7; in 1895 the family lived at 8 Royal Crescent, and between 1896 and 1897 at 12 Clarence Square in Pittville.

On leaving Cheltenham Ledger became the Vicar of St John the Evangelist, Hollington, St Leonards 1897-1903, and afterwards Vicar of St Paul’s, Tupsley, Herefordshire 1903-23. In March 1900 the Hastings and St Leonards Observer described him as ‘an energetic temperance worker’; he also collected British butterflies and moths for display.

He and his wife retired to Shirley Drive, Worthing, where from 1930 he assisted the Rector at St Andrew’s Church, West Tarring. He died in 1932, at the age of seventy-three. His estate at death was valued at just over £2,230.
