Robert was born at Paradise House, Painswick, in Gloucestershire, in 1797, the son of Robert Smith, of Painswick, and his wife Elizabeth (née Pitt). He matriculated at Pembroke College, Oxford in 1816, Scholar 1817-25, BA 1820, MA 1824. In 1821 he was ordained Deacon (Gloucester), and was licensed Curate of Harefield in 1821; he served as Perpetual Curate of St Catherine’s, Gloucester from 1825 until his resignation in 1869. He also became Perpetual Curate of Churchdown from 1826 until resigning in 1852, and of Whaddon from 1831. In 1831, when he lived at Twigworth Villa, near Gloucester, he married Sophia Mary, daughter of Mr Thomas Swaine, of Regent’s Park, London; they had three sons. He became Curate of Norton, near Gloucester, from 1832. He was a pluralist (holding more than one living), instituted Rector of Cowley, near Cheltenham, from 1837 until his death. The family’s movements can be plotted from the fact that his first son was born at Twigworth (1833), the second at Barnwood (1836), and the third at Cowley (1840). Between 1845 and 1846 he lived at 21 Clarence Square, Pittville, and from 1845 was a Director of the County of Gloucester Provident Building Society. At the time of the 1851 census, when he was a Magistrate of the county, and was elected Chaplain to the Gloucester Union, he lived at 7 York Parade, Wotton, Gloucester, where he remained until his death, at the age of seventy-three, in 1870. ▶Moved to Pittville from: [uncertain] Moved from Pittville to: [uncertain] ▶Date of death: 20 September 1870 Place of death: Gloucester ▶Date of burial: 26 September 1870 Place of burial: Hucclecote (a hamlet of Churchdown), Gloucestershire ▶Notes: ID: 5578 Contributor(s): John Simpson/Alan Munden
