He was born in Chelsea in 1842, the third son of George Ash, dentist, of Chelsea, and his wife Catherine (née Harrison). Ash matriculated at Worcester College, Oxford in 1862,  BA 1865, MA 1868.

Ash was ordained Deacon in 1869, and Priest (Winchester) in 1870, and was licensed Curate of Fareham, Hampshire 1869-70, before moving to Cheltenham as Curate of St Paul’s 1871-75; in 1872 he lived at 39 Clarence Square, and from 1873-5 at 32 Clarence Square. While he was at Cheltenham, in 1872, he married Sarah Ann, youngest daughter of Richard Porter Esq., of Southfield House, Fareham.

On leaving Cheltenham he became the Vicar of Repps with Bestwick, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk 1875-95; earlier in 1875 he had been licensed Curate of Foxley in Wiltshire, but did not take this up. By the early 1890s the household lived at Clarence Villa, Martham, Great Yarmouth, where Henry died in 1929; he was buried at St Mary the Virgin, Martham. His estate at death was sworn at just over £29,000; he left his house, along £7,000, to the London City Mission; the house was to become a Home of Rest for Missionaries and the remainder of his estate was left principally to various other charities.
