John Haydon Cardew

He was born in Bengal in 1823, the eldest son of Cornelius Cardew, who served the East India Company in India, and his wife Martha (née Masters). Cardew matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford in 1842, BA 1847. He was ordained Deacon (Bath and Wells) in 1847, and Priest in 1848. In 1848 he was licensed Assistant Curate of Curry Mallet with Curland, Somerset, where his grandfather was Rector. In 1850 he married Teresa, youngest daughter of the Revd. John Torr, Vicar of Westleigh, Devon. He became Curate of Belton, Leicestershire by 1850, and by 1853 had accepted the curacy of Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire. In 1855 he was appointed Curate of St Paul’s, West Dean, Gloucestershire and of Old Croft, Forest of Dean, by 1859 becoming Curate of Abbot’s Ann, Hampshire. In 1861 he was appointed Perpetual Curate of Pishill, Oxfordshire. After this he moved to Cheltenham, to take up his appointment in 1866 as Chaplain of the General Hospital, Cheltenham. In 1867 he was also appointed by the Poor Law Board to be Chaplain of the Cheltenham Workhouse; his address was recorded as 36 Clarence Square, Pittville, and in 1871 he lived with his family at Greville Villa, Leckhampton. He remained in the town through 1880, when he lived at Cambray Pavilion. In 1886 he was appointed Rector of Buckland, Gloucestershire (in addition to his post at the Cheltenham Workhouse).
