He was the fourth son of James Paterson, and his wife Louisa (née Dawes). Born in Montrose in 1821, Paterson was educated at Montrose Academy before being admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1839; he matriculated the following year, BA 1845, MA 1870. Initially Paterson considered a career in the law, and was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1839. However, he decided to take holy orders, and was ordained Deacon (Hereford) in 1849, and Priest in 1850. From 1849-52 he was licensed Curate of Church, Stoke, Montgomeryshire, though he married Laetitia Phillipa, daughter of the Revd. Charles Leicester, at her home town of Westbury, Shropshire in 1851 and later that year the couple lived in Imperial Square, Cheltenham, where he was apparently without cure of souls. The couple had four surviving children, three girls and a boy. In 1853 was appointed Perpetual Curate of Chelford, Cheshire, and lived with his growing family at the Parsonage there until 1879. But in 1870 the family lived at 3 Columbia Place, near Pittville in Cheltenham, an absentee incumbent of Chelford (his son then attended Cheltenham College), and from 1872 until 1875 lived at 48 Clarence Square in Pittville, and subsequently at Chelford Lodge, 22 Montpelier, Weston-super-Mare in Somerset. At Weston-super-Mare he served as Local Secretary and Treasurer to the Church Missionary Society, and died at home at Chelford Lodge in 1884, at the age of sixty-two; his wealth at death was sworn at £4,642. ▶Moved to Pittville from: Elsewhere in Cheltenham Moved from Pittville to: Weston-super-Mare ▶Date of death: 24 January 1884 Place of death: Weston-super-Mare, Somerset ▶Date of burial: Place of burial: ▶Notes: ID: 5879 Contributor(s): John Simpson/Alan Munden
