He was appointed Minister of the Southend Chapel, Lewisham in 1824. From about 1850 until 1856 he lived with his family at Apsley House (now Tower House), Pittville Circus). In 1852 he very publicly refused to renew his subscription to the General Hospital in Cheltenham, which had not, he felt, properly treated a gentleman he had referred to the institution as a patient.
