Lifestory: Gloucestershire Echo 12 April 1918: The Late Mrs. Disney Ellis — The funeral of Mrs. Disney Ellis, whose death was announced in our issue of last week, took place on Thursday at the cemetery after a service at All Saints’ Church. Mrs. Ellis was one of the oldest inhabitants of Cheltenham, and was the widow of Colonel Henry Disney Ellis, who commanded the 1st battalion of the 9th (Norfolk) Regiment, after previous service with the 33rd Regiment.

Mrs. Ellis was born in 1829 at Berwick-on-Tweed, and she had therefore lived in five reigns. She had an eventful life, having accompanied her husband’s regiment at many home and foreign stations. She had been with the British troops who evacuated the lonian Islands on their surrender to Greece in 1864 and was subsequently at Gibraltar and at the Cape. She and her young family travelled with the regiment by sailing ship from Gibraltar to the Cape in 1865, when a large number of the troops of died of cholera. After her husband’s death, in 1877 she continued to travel much abroad, visiting Canada and America, and so late as 1913, when she was more than 80 years old, she spent a winter in Egypt, visiting monuments there, riding a camel. The late Colonel Ellis’s family had lived at Cheltenham since the middle of the 18th century.

Mrs. Ellis leaves three surviving children, who were represented at the funeral by her eldest, son (Mr. Henry Disney Ellis), her son-in-law (Mr. Charles Milward), and her grand-children. Miss Esther and Miss Norah Milward.
