Lifestory: Samuel Whitehorne Barnett came to the priesthood via Jamaica and Dublin. He was born in Jamaica in 1798, the son of Samuel Whitehorne Barnett Jr., of Jamaica, and grandson of the Hon. Samuel W. Barnett, of the Mount Hybla estate, Jamaica, a Member of the Jamaican Privy Council, and his wife Eleanor Gordon, daughter of Edward Woollery, of Westmoreland, Jamaica.

Barnett attended Trinity College, Dublin from 1815, BA 1820. After university he took holy orders and was ordained Deacon (Gloucester) in 1822, after which he was licensed Curate of St John the Baptist, Gloucester (with a stipend of £40 a year). He was ordained Priest (also Gloucester) the following year. In 1825 he married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of James Lane, of Pentonville; the couple had five sons and three daughters.

He was advanced to Curate of Long Bredy, Dorset in 1829, and to the more valuable curacy of Bromham, Wiltshire in 1832 (at £100 a year and a rectory house). In 1843 he resided at 2 Pittville Villas (now 64 Prestbury Road), and in that year attended a meeting of the Cheltenham Auxillary of the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews; it is not clear what clerical position he had in Cheltenham.

In 1847 Barnett was appointed Rector of Towersey in Buckinghamshire, where he remained until the late 1870s. He lived latterly and in 1880 died at Newbury Villa, Thame in Oxfordshire, at the age of eighty-one. His wealth at death was valued at under £3,000 for probate.
