He was educated at King’s College, Cambridge, BA 1836, MA 1839, BD and DD 1853; Fellow 1834 until his marriage. He was ordained Deacon (Oxford) in 1843, and Priest (Lincoln) in 1844. In 1844 he also married Katherine Lucia Law, and they had three sons and four daughters. He served as an Assistant Master at Eton College 1835-53, becoming Headmaster 1853-62, and Provost from 1862 until his death in 1884; in 1854 he published his edition of Terence’s Comedies. He did much to modernise Eton, but was restrained in some aspects by his Provost E. C. Hawtrey; he was “an amiable West Country man with a trace of a West Country accent, and a respected teacher” (ODNB). In 1861 he is listed as a Visitor, with his wife and son Montague, at the house of his father-in-law George Law at Cotswold Lodge, Pittville Circus. For most of his time at Eton he was also Rector of Chilton-Cantelo 1848-84.
