W. Goodeve.—Cheltenham has lost one of its oldest and most respected residents by the death of Mr. George William Goodeve, of Hawksworth, Pittville. He had lived in the town for the greater part of his life, and was a familiar and favourite figure in local society endeared to all who knew him by his genial qualities and his love of sport. As a sportsman, indeed, he was marked by all round proficiency—; a good shot, an enthusiastic golfer, and an expert fisherman. For some years he was captain of the Cheltenham Golf Club, and his demise will be felt very painfully by our local golf votaries, as well as by members of the New Club, with which institution he had long been associated. We understand that on the 1st inst. he went to Killarney in company with Mr. Jobling and Mr. C. Hutchins for a few weeks’ salmon fishing. On Tuesday afternoon he was fishing from his boat, and when playing a salmon he suddenly collapsed, dying instantaneously and without pain. Mr. Goodeve, who was a step-brother of the present Earl of Mar and Kellie, leaves a widow, a daughter, and two sons in Ceylon. A third son, Major Lionel Goodeve (Royal Scots) was killed in the war. ▶Moved to Pittville from: Moved from Pittville to: ▶Date of death: 22 April 1919 Place of death: Killarney, Ireland ▶Date of burial: Place of burial: ▶Notes: ID: 10516 Contributor(s): David Drinkwater
