Lifestory: John Browne was born at Riverstone, Co. Cork, in 1794, the son of the Revd. Jemmett Browne, Prebendary of Killaspugmullane, Co. Cork, and his wife Frances (née Blennerhassett). He was educated at Eton College, at Trinity College, Dublin in 1811 and at Trinity College, Cambridge, BA (first class in Civil Law) 1816-17, LLB 1818. Taking holy orders, he was ordained Deacon (Salisbury) in 1819, and Priest (Chester) in 1820. Between 1819 and 1828 he was Curate of Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, and from 1828 until his death he served as the Minister of Holy Trinity, Cheltenham.

Browne was regarded as an outstanding preacher and was second only to Francis Close in the ministerial hierarchy in Cheltenham. Both men were involved in church extension, education, and opposition to Tractarianism. ‘High and rampant would it be if the shining light of a Close or a Browne, could be removed’ (Cheltenham Journal, 14 May 1844). He published a number of volumes of his edited sermons, and was particularly interested in the improvement of education; he was appointed Vice-President of Cheltenham College, which he helped to found. As a mark of their affection and support his congregation presented him with a parsonage house—East Hayes, Pittville, into which he and his expanding family moved from 2 (now 31) Pittville Lawn in the early 1840s. In 1850 he succeeded his brother Jemmett to the property in Riverstown, Co. Cork.

Browne died at his home, East Hayes, in Pittville Circus Road, in July 1857, at the age of sixty-two.
