Lifestory: John was the eldest son of the Revd. John Evans, Perpetual Curate of Pentrefoelas, Denbighshire and later Archdeacon of Merionethshire, and his wife Mary. He matriculated at Jesus College, Oxford in 1863,  BA 1868, MA 1872. He was ordained Deacon in 1868, and Priest (both Bangor) in 1869. In 1868 he was licensed Curate of Llanfachreth, Merionethshire, and in 1869 became Curate of Festiniog and Maentwrog, Merionethshire. In 1871 was appointed Perpetual Curate of Cemmaes, Montgomeryshire. In 1872 he moved on to become Vicar of Margam, Glamorganshire, and in 1880 of Towyn, Denbighshire, and then Rector of Peterston-super-Ely, Cardiff from 1890. He married Ella Louisa Ellenborough, youngest daughter of Colonel Burlton CB, of Oaklands Hall, Middlesex and formerly Commissary General of Bengal, at Otterbourne, Hampshire in 1883 (she was born in Cheltenham). In 1898 he was preferred to the rectory of Llanblethian-with-Cowbridge and Welsh St Donatta, Glamorganshire. From 1911 until 1912 he lived as a retired clergyman with his wife and three servants at Prestwich Lodge (now Star Court), Pittville Circus Road. In 1912 he acted as Assistant Secretary to the Bishop of Worcester’s Church Extension Fund. He died later in 1912, when he had returned to live at St Asaph, Denbighshire (formerly of Wainhams, Shrewsbury for a while), and he was buried at St Michael’s Churchyard, Cardeston, Shropshire. His effects at death amounted to just over £6,400.
