LifestoryCheltenham Chronicle 4 December 1927: The death took place on Thursday at 13 Lypiatt-terrace, Cheltenham, of Mrs. Lucy Sophia Brandt, widow of Mr. Francis Brandt, a former Judge of the High Court of Madras, and a J.P. for Gloucestershire, who, after his retirement, lived for many years in Cheltenham, and who died in 1925. Mrs. Brandt was a daughter of the Rev. William Dobson, who was the second Principal of Cheltenham College, over which he ruled for the fourteen years from 1845 to 1859. Another of Mr. Dobson's daughters still living in Cheltenham is Miss Dobson, of Willoughby, Suffolk-square. Mrs. Brandt was married to the late Mr. F. Brandt at All Saints' Church, Cheltenham, in January, 1871, and after her marriage lived for a number of years in India, returning to England upon the retirement of her husband from his Indian judgeship. She is survived by one son, Mr. Cyril Brandt, who is in the legal profession in Calcutta; and two daughters, viz., Mrs. Shaw, who is living abroad; and Mrs. Collins, wife of Dr. John Rupert Collins, of Milverton, Bayshill, Cheltenham. Mrs. Brandt was mother of the heroic Captain Frank Brandt, of the ill-fated Monmouth, sunk by the Germans at the Battle of Coronel in November, 1914.
