Walter matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, BA 1861, MA 1865. In 1861 he lived with his aunt Harriet Phillips at 6 Russell Street, Walcot, Bath, a student. He was ordained Deacon in 1863, and Priest (both Bath and Wells) in 1864. From 1863 until 1865 he served as Curate of Holy Trinity, Bridgwater, in 1863 being appointed Honorary Chaplain to the 26th Somersetshire Rifle Corps (he resigned his commission in 1875). He then became Curate of St Mary, Taunton 1865-8, before moving to Cheltenham as Curate of All Saints, 1868-70. In 1871 he was a lodger, with his widowed father, at a lodging-house at 4 (now 35) Pittville Lawn (no occupation is given). He was appointed Rector of Shepperton, London 1877-90. In 1887 he married Maria Catterina Johnanna, spinster, 41, daughter of Eisld von Rosenbach, Colonel in the Austrian army, and widow of Robert Frederick Walker. By 1891 he was a widower, living at 49 Pulteney Street in Bath, where he continued to reside until his death in 1911, at the age of seventy-one.
