George Edward Alvis

Edward John Alvis, Curate of Diss, and his wife Emma. He attended King’s Lynn Grammar School, as a boarder, and Christ’s College, Cambridge, BA 1889, MA 1893. After obtaining his BA he became an Assistant Schoolmaster in Carlisle by 1891. He was ordained Deacon 1894, and Priest (both Norwich) in 1895. He started his clerical career as Curate to his grandfather: in 1894 he was licensed Curate of St Mary’s Church, West Winch, Norfolk, where he remained until 1899. He served at Ripon Cathedral in a number of capacities, as the Choir Chaplain 1899-1905, Curate to the Cathedral parish from 1900, and as Succentor 1905-8, and Minor Canon 1908-13. He served as Chaplain to St Mary Magdalene Hospital, Ripon 1900-13 and was joint Vicar of Ripon 1908-13. In 1913 he married Marjorie Sempill, daughter of Henry Syed Copland, Civil Engineer, of Eltham, Kent; they had two children. In that year he became Vicar of Dacre, Yorkshire 1913, migrating to be Vicar of Christ Church, Skipton 1920-7, and Vicar of Mountsorrel, Leicestershire from 1927 for over ten years. He eventually decided to retire to Cheltenham after the onset of heart problems, and from 1939 until his death he lived in retirement at Saxham, 108 Evesham Road with his family, though in his later years he assisted the Vicar of Sevenhampton in his Sunday duties. He died in Cheltenham in 1943, at the age of seventy-five.
