He was ordained Deacon in 1822, and Priest in 1823 (both Gloucester). In 1822 he was appointed Curate of Dean Forest Holy Trinity, and became Vicar of Wonastow, Monmouthshire 1833-7. In 1851 he lived at Goodrich House, Goodrich, Herefordshire (a “clergyman without cure of Souls”, and a landed proprietor) with his wife Elizabeth, son John, and three servants; in 1861 he still lived there, a clergyman without cure of souls, whose income came mainly from land, but with his wife and his second son Francis, who farmed, along with four servants. In 1871 he lodged (a widower, aged 72) at Sussex Villa, 10 Clarence Road, Pittville; his sister-in-law Jane Boultbee, lived in Segrave Cottage (now 4 Prestbury Road) in 1871.
