He was born in Gayton, Cheshire, in 1802, the second and youngest son of John Thomas Hendry Hopper, of Wilton Castle, Durham, and his wife Ann. Hendry matriculated at St John’s College, Cambridge in 1821, BA 1825, MA 1828; he was ordained Deacon in 1827, and Priest (both Bath and Wells) in 1829. In 1826 he was initiated into the Marquis of Granby Lodge of the Freemasons, Co. Durham. In 1827 he was licensed Curate of Portishead, Somerset, and in 1829 became Curate of Walton-in-Gordano, Somerset. He married Susan Plomley, youngest daughter of the Revd. Stiverd Jenkins, of Locking, Somerset, in 1833. By 1838 he lived in Cheltenham, and in 1841 became Curate of Holy Trinity, where he remained until 1844; from 1840-2 he lived at the house he leased, Bilbrook House, Winchcombe Street, with his wife Susan and his household servants from landlord George Dinsdale. From 1844 until 1870 he was Vicar of St George, Brandon Hill, Bristol. His No altar, no altar pieces, no popery was published in 1846; he also published some prayers and a selection of psalms and hymns for use in church. He continued to live in Bristol, where he died at his home, 23 Caledonia Place, aged seventy-three, in 1875.
