▶Lifestory: Griffiths was the eldest son of Lewis Griffiths, of Marle Hill. He matriculated at Worcester College, Oxford in 1844, BA 1848, MA 1851.

At the time of the 1841 census he lived with his family at Marle Hill (he was also there for the 1861 census). In 1848 he was ordained Deacon (Gloucester), and in the following year appointed Curate of St John’s Church, in Cheltenham. At the time of the 1851 census he was Curate of Hitchin in Hertfordshire. Late in 1851 he was preferred to the Rectory of nearby Swindon (Village), Gloucestershire.

In 1860 he was appointed Chaplain of the Oddfellows’ Rifle Corps in Cheltenham. In 1861 at Cheltenham Police Court (with his father sitting as a Magistrate) he explained how his house had been broken into; the police had found the goods being sold in Cardiff. In 1861 he also resigned from his duties at Swindon, and by 1862 was Curate at Cowley Church in Gloucestershire; in 1863 he was confirmed as Vicar of Cowley.

He died suddenly, at Marle Hill, his father’s house, of acute bronchitis, at the age of 38; his estate at death sworn at under £600.
