General information▶Date of birth: (baptised) 8 June 1781 Place of birth: Westmill, Hertfordshire ▶Father: John Law Mother: Mary ▶Spouse(s): Elizabeth Hibbert Date(s) of marriage: 3 October 1808 Place(s) of marriage: Alderley, Cheshire ▶Occupation: Clergyman (Anglican) ▶Lifestory: Henry Law held several clerical appointments at the same time, and also spent some of his time as a resident of Cheltenham, He was born in Westmill, Hertfordshire and was baptised in 1781, the fifth son of the Revd. John Law DD, Vicar of Westmill, and Archdeacon of Rochester, and his wife Mary. He was educated at Harrow School, and matriculated at St John’s College, Cambridge in 1806, LLB 1806. In 1804 he was ordained Deacon (Ely), and Priest (Rochester) in 1805. In 1808 he married Elizabeth, daughter of William Hibbert Esq., of Harehill, Cheshire and of Clapham, Surrey. He was preferred to the vicarage of Griston in Norfolk in 1811, where he remained for a year; in 1811 he was also preferred to the vicarage of Standon in Hertfordshire in 1811, and remained there for over forty years, until 1856; during that time and beyond he was also Vicar of Stretham with Little Thetford, Cambridgeshire 1812-18 and Rector of Downham, Cambridgeshire from 1818 until his death in 1862. He served as a Magistrate for both Hertfordshire and the Isle of Ely. In 1857 and 1858 (when his wife died), soon after he left Standon and while he was still engaged in Downham, Law lived at Cleveland House (now 38 Evesham Road), Pittville. Law moved to Bath in 1858, and lived at 23 The Circus and then at 4 Queen’s Square, where he died in 1862, at the age of eighty-one; he was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Cheltenham.
