He was ordained Deacon in 1850, and Priest (both Armagh) in 1851. Hardy was for a short while around 1850 Curate of Kilmore, Armagh, and in 1852 is noted as the Incumbent of nearby Loughgall and Grange. In 1857 he married Emily Meredith, and the couple had five sons and three daughters.

In early 1858 he and his wife arrived at 13 (now 63) Pittville Lawn, Cheltenham, and around 1859 he lived at 42 Clarence Square, Pittville, and in 1860-1 at 11 Wellington Square, nearby, with his wife Emily, his two daughters and one son, and (at least in 1861) with one pupil. From 1864-5 he served as Curate-in-charge of Great Bolas, Shropshire, after which he was appointed Perpetual Curate of Longdon-upon-Tern in the same county, where his father-in-law was Rector. He resigned from his post at Longdon in 1890, and in his last years he lived in the Commune de le Tour de Peilz Vevey in Switzerland. His wealth at death was sworn at just over £2,700.
