Lifestory: Charles Hawkins was the fourth son of the Revd. William Hawkins Hawkins, of Cheltenham. He was educated at King Edward’s School, Liverpool and in 1838 matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, second class in 1842 examinations, BCL 1846. In 1846 he married Phoebe Agnes Isabel Lyford (they had two sons and two daughters), and in the following year was ordained Priest (London).

He served as a Classical Master in Hertford for Christ’s Hospital School and in 1846 was appointed Second Classical Master at Christ’s Hospital School in Hertford. In 1852 he moved back to London as an Assistant Master at the principal base of Christ’s Hospital School; he also became Afternoon Lecturer at the Foundling Hospital in London for the Autumn season 1853. By 1861 he was back in Hertford as an Assistant Grammar Master for the School, later returning to Christ’s Hospital in London, where he remained until 1874; in 1869 he served on the Board of Examiners of the College of Preceptors, as a school inspector.

In 1874 he was appointed by the Governors of Christ’s Hospital to the vicarage of Oakley in Essex, where he served until 1880, resigning after witnessing the disappointment of several of his friends converting to Roman Catholicism but supported by a considerable pension from his school. A “consistent Conservative”, an “old high Churchman”, and an inveterate fly-fisherman, he moved to Cheltenham (The Grotto, Leckhampton) with his household, without official religious duties. By 1885 he had removed to 9 Wellington Square, Pittville, and he remained there with his wife and daughter until his death in 1893, at the age of seventy-three; he fell and broke his leg, but died three weeks later of a long-standing weakness of the heart. He was buried at Cheltenham; his wealth at death was sworn at over £14,250.
