John Briscoe Bromfield

He was educated at Shrewsbury School and matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford in 1881, BA 1884, MA 1891. He was ordained Deacon in 1886, and Priest (Manchester) in 1887. In 1886 he was licensed Curate of St Clement’s, Ordsal, Salford, and in 1888 he resigned this to take up the post of Curate of the Chequerbent district, in the parish of St Bartholomew’s, Westhoughton, near Bolton-le-Moors. After six months, in 1889, he moved south, accepting the curacy at Bathwick, near Bath, leaving this later in the year to become Curate of Brill-with-Boarstall, Buckinghamshire, in the diocese of Oxford. In 1891 he was appointed Curate of St Mary’s Church, Eccleston, Chorley, Manchester, until he was presented to the rectory of Houghton, St Ives, Huntingdonshire in 1893. He married Charlotte Beatrice, daughter of Mr E. Hick Ashworth, at Kensington, in 1900, and in 1901 the couple lived at 16 Pittville Villas (now 36 Prestbury Road), with John’s widowed mother and his sister (his mother had previously lived nearby, at 5 Pittville Crescent, from 1891). By Christmas 1901 he was officiating as Curate-in-Charge at Nether Wallop, Hampshire, and soon moved to a curacy at Stoke Edith, Herefordshire, from where he was presented with the living as Rector of Calthorpe, Rugby in 1904. He returned to Cheltenham, where he died on 17 September 1910, at the age of forty-seven, at 10 Clarence Street; he was buried at Prestbury.
