CHELTENHAM COSTUMIER’S TRAGIC END. SAD RESULT OF MELANCHOLIA.

As briefly announced in the “Echo” on Thursday evening. Mr. Edward Charles Clee (49), of 9 Leamington-place. Prestbury-road, well-known costumier and old townsman of Cheltenham, died on Wednesday afternoon under sad circumstances which will render an inquest necessary.

Further information is to the effect that Mr. Clee had for a long time past been attended by Dr. Hutton for melancholia, the last occasion being recently on Monday last, and the medical man had told the family to keep sharp watch on him in consequence of the nature of his ailment. For the last few weeks the deceased had been in the habit of rising about mid-day.

On Tuesday, about 12 45 p.m., his daughter, Miss Lilian, heard a noise upstairs. Going to her father’s bedroom she found he was not there, and once returning downstairs opened the door of the lavatory. There she found her father with a piece of braid tied several times around his neck, and also fastened to the water pipe of the cistern. The feet of the deceased were on the ground, his body hanging in a sloping position. He was fully dressed with the exception of his collar and slippers. With the assistance her sister Miss Clee cut the braid from his neck, also immediately sending for Dr. Collins who resides nest door. Dr. Collins found Mr. Clee apparently lifeless, but recourse to artificial respiration got him to breathe, though he remained unconscious until death took place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Death was apparently due to haemorrhage of the brain, due to the rupture of a blood vessel, caused by the compression of the arteries during the period of hanging. The inquest has been fixed for Saturday.
