MARRIAGE OF CAPTAIN PENOYRE.

At the picturesque and historic parish church of Arley-on-Severn, near Bewdley, the marriage took place on Wednesday of Captain Edward Hugh Raymond, late of the Royal Scots, son the late Rev. Slade Baker Penoyre, of Cheltenham, and nephew the late General Raymond, and Miss Ruth Lea, youngest daughter the late Rev. J. T. Lea vicar of Far Forest, and niece of the late Archdeacon Lea, Droitwich. The ceremony was kept as quiet as possible owing to the death of the bridegroom’s father some months ago, but despite this there was a large gathering, and the village and church were decorated for the occasion. The officiating clergymen were the Rev. W. Lea. vicar of Arley-on-Severn, and brother of the bride, the Rev. Ernest Lea, vicar of Eastham, Tenbury, cousin of the bride, and the Rev. Slade Stallard Penoyre, rector of Stockton and brother of the bridegroom. The bridesmaids were the Misses N. and R. Scott-Moncrief, cousins of the bride.

The bride, who was given away by her brother, wore a costume of white faced cloth trimmed with ermine and braided, and a large picture hat with plumes. Mr. John ff. Baker Penoyre. brother the bridegroom, acted as best man.

The bridal party included Sir Owen and Lady Scourfield, General and Mrs. Murray, the Rev. W. and Miss Lea, Mrs. Turnour, Miss Baker Penoyre, Miss Katharine Baker Penoyre, Miss Maud Baker Penoyre, Miss Winifred Baker Penoyre, Rev. Slade and Mrs. Stallard Penoyre, Mr. Arthur Tumour, Mr. Keith Turnour, R.N., Mr. and Mrs. Scott-Moncrief, Rev. Charles McArthur, Colonel and Mrs.. Childe, Mr. R. and Mrs. Woodward (Arley Castle), and Mr. Hugh Allen, of Cressally. The honeymoon will be spent in Egypt.

His first army appointment was as a 2nd Lieut. in the Yorkshire Regiment on the 23rd March 1889, he transferred to the Royal Scots on the 17th April of that year and was promoted to Lieut. on the 15th November 1891 under the name Edward Hugh Broome Baker-Stallard-Penoyre. He was then promoted to Captain on the 12th August 1896, served in the Boer War & retired on the 8th September 1908. He then served during WW1, promoted to Major and awarded the Distinguished Service Order after entering France on the 6th July 1915.

Notes:  In 1890, following the death of his grandfather William Francis Raymond, Edward’s parents changed their name by deed poll to Stallard-Penoyre with the family sometimes being known with the surname Baker-Penoyre . Around 1908 Edward changed his name to Edward Hugh Broome Raymond ID: 22
