He was commissioned to the 3rd Battalion of the Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry Regiment on 1 January 1915 and joined at the Cambridge Barracks, Portsmouth on 16 Jan. 1915. At the time of his marriage in 1917 he was attached to the Royal Flying Corps. On his marriage certificate he gives his home address as Deanwood (Pittville Circus Road). His wife Margery very sadly died from bronchial pneumonia, shortly after giving birth to their first child, who did not survive the birth; her father had passed away a few days earlier. In the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for 1969 he was awarded a CBE for services to Export as President, Rotary Hoes Ltd.
