He matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford in 1813, BA 1816, MA 1820. In 1817 he married (Sophia) Elizabeth Wilson; they had three sons and two daughters. In 1817 he was also ordained Deacon, and in 1818 Priest (both Chester). He was also appointed Curate of Standish, Lancashire in 1817, and transferred to Deddington, Oxfordshire as Vicar in 1822. In 1841 he lived with his wife at Colby Lodge, Tenby, Pembrokeshire, where he was a clergyman; in 1836 he had conducted a wedding in Cheltenham. Between about 1844 and his death in 1870 he lived with his wife Elizabeth at 14 Pittville Parade (now 28 Evesham Road), as a clergyman “without cure of souls”. The Cheltenham Chronicle records that he lectured on Thessalonians on five evenings at Cheltenham Town Hall in early 1849. In 1855 he led a campaign from his address in Pittville for the repeal of “a portion of the 5th Canon of the Church”, whereby those who spoke against the Thirty-Nine Articles were automatically excommunicated.
