He was educated at the Perse School, Cambridge, and was admitted to Caius College, Cambridge in 1844; he migrated to Sidney Sussex College in 1845, BA 1852. MA 1860. He was ordained Deacon in 1855, and Priest (both York) in 1857. He was appointed Curate of St Paul’s, Sheffield 1855-6, Curate of St George’s, Sheffield 1856-9, and Curate of Horwich, Lancashire 1859-60. In 1860 he became Perpetual Curate of Ulley, Yorkshire until 1867, and Curate of St Peter in the Valley, Staverton in 1871, resigning apparently after a local dispute in 1876. From 1871 he lived with his wife, son, and two daughters at 17 Clarence Square, and the next year moved to Cotswold Lodge, Pittville Circus Road, where the family remained until 1877.
