He enlisted in the 2/5th Gloucestershire Regiment during the first weeks of WW1, service no. 3294TF later 241090. At the time he was in business in Liverpool, residing at 49, Falkland Road, Egremont, Wallasey. A report in the Gloucestershire Echo of 8 May 1918 states that he had been missing since 22 March 1918. Records show that he was taken prisoner on that date at Attilly, France and sent to hospital with a slight wound to the head. He arrived at Darmstadt Prisoner of War camp in Germany on 27 April 1918. Sidney did survive the war and was discharge on 21 Feb 1919 to his home address in Liverpool, with a pension due to deafness in his right ear caused by active service during the war.
