He had nine children: Richard Ellison, Charles, Walter, Florence Mary, Ada Constance, Laura, Frank, Dorothy, and Kathleen. Richard was one of the founder members of Clifton Rugby Football Club and father of its first captain, Charles Strachan. He was a member of Leeds Artillery Volunteers for 26 years.
