He matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford in 1832, BA 1836. MA 1839, and was ordained Deacon (Rochester) in 1837, and Priest (Chichester) in 1838. In 1837 he was appointed Curate of All Saints Church, Heathfield, Sussex, and in 1839 became Perpetual Curate of St Peter’s, Morley, near Leeds until 1841 (a living in the gift of the Earl of Cardigan), when he was presented with the vicarage of St Bridget’s Church, Skenfrith, Monmouthshire 1841-6. In 1846 he accepted the post of Perpetual Curate of St Mary the Virgin’s Church, Woodkirk, Yorkshire, where he stayed until 1872. In 1847, soon after leaving Skenfrith, he married Susan, eldest daughter of George Cave, of Hillstonhouse, Monmouthshire; they had four sons and a daughter. In 1871 he and his family moved south when he was licensed by the Bishop of Bath and Wells as Curate of Christ Church, Nailsea, Somerset; by 1874 he served as acting Vicar while the incumbent was unwell. In Nailsea he established a fund to replace the church organ.
