General information▶Date of birth: 1Q 1860 Place of birth: Dulwich, Surrey ▶Father: Philip Lyne Mother: Elizabeth Hicks ▶Spouse(s): Mary Louisa Brett Date(s) of marriage: 18 May 1886 Place(s) of marriage: St Luke’s Church, West Norwood, Surrey ▶Occupation: Clergyman (Anglican) ▶Lifestory: Leonard was the seventh son of Philip and Elizabeth Lyne. In 1881 he lived with his widowed mother and family at West Dulwich: she was a Clerk in a Fire and Life Insurance office, and he was a Manager at a Surgical Instrument Maker. Deciding on a life in the Church, he then attended Gloucester Theological College, and was ordained Deacon in 1884, and Priest (both Gloucester and Bristol) in 1885. In 1884 he was licensed Curate of All Saints, Gloucester, where he remained until 1886, when he became Curate of Adwick-le-Street, Yorkshire. In the same year he married Mary Louisa, eldest daughter of the Revd. E. Percy Brett, Vicar of Sandhurst in Gloucestershire. He then became Curate of Corsham, Wiltshire 1887-90, before moving in that year to Cheltenham as Curate of All Saints. He lived with his wife and two daughters (and his sister-in-law) at 38 Pittville Villas (now 38 Prestbury Road) until about 1898, when he moved to Glenfall Lodge (now 94 All Saints Road). He was appointed Honorary Diocesan Missioner from 1897. After his post in Cheltenham Leonard moved to Gloucester, as Vicar of St Mark’s, to which post he was appointed in late 1899. He was also appointed honorary Canon of Gloucester in 1913, and for nearly twenty years was a prominent member of the Gloucester Board of Guardians, the Gloucester Education Committee, and several other local organisations. From 1899 until his death he lived with his family at The Vicarage, 52 London Road. He died tragically, at the age of fifty-nine, when he was out for an evening walk and (said to be partially deaf) was struck by a train on the Gloucester-Cheltenham line near Barnwood Bridge, Gloucester; the death was adjudged accidental. His effects at death were valued at just over £2,750. ▶Moved to Pittville from: Corsham, Wiltshire Moved from Pittville to: Gloucester ▶Date of death: 18 December 1919 Place of death: Barnwood, Gloucester ▶Date of burial: Place of burial: ▶Notes: ID: 8047 Contributor(s): John Simpson/Alan Munden
