Lifestory: Henry Douglas Gee Clark was a parish clergyman in the Midlands and North-west before resigning after the War, in 1920, and becoming a confectioner and tobacconist in Norwich. He was the eldest of three children of William Henry and Elizabeth Frances Clark. All of the children were baptised at Holy Trinity, Worcester. (Gee was the maiden name of his father’s maternal grandmother).

When Henry was ten the family moved to Cheltenham and lived at Moultondale (now Kingswood) in Pittville Circus Road. Henry was schooled in Cheltenham then went to St John's College, Oxford where he graduated in 1895. He was ordained Deacon at Ely Cathedral in 1897 (Priest 1898), and as a clergyman officiated at the weddings of both his sisters, the funerals of both of his parents, and the baptisms of at least two of his nephews.

Henry was licensed at first to the curacy of St Paul's, Bedford 1887-9. He was subsequently appointed Curate at St Margaret’s, Wolstanton, Staffordshire (1899-1900), and at the time of the 1901 census lived with at the family home at Moultondale in Pittville. He next held a curacy at Holy Trinity, Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire (1901-5), though in 1905 registered a motorcycle in his own name at his parents' address in Pittville. He then became Curate at St Annes, St Annes-on-Sea, Lancashire (1906-8) and St John's, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire (1908-10), where he married his first wife Marion Broadbent in 1909. After the death of his father he also acted as a Trustee in the sale of Moultondale in 1909.

In 1910 Henry became the Vicar of St Botolph, Shepshed, near Loughborough, Leicestershire, and it was here that he both baptised (November 1916) and then buried (February 1917) their infant daughter Elaine Cherie Gee-Clark. Henry remained at Shepshed until he resigned in 1920 and went into trade.

By at least 1927, Henry had moved to Norwich, where he was a retail confectioner & tobacconist. He married Mildred Webster in 1930, becoming stepfather to her then four-year-old daughter Margaret Mildred Lilian Webster (1926 Bedford-2003 Norwich), who then took his surname.

Henry Clark died in 1946 at Norwich, at the age of seventy-four. Despite the distance, the Clark family seems to have remained close, as his brother-in-law Arthur Boulton was one of the executors on both Henry’s will in 1946 and that of his widow Mildred in 1963.
