He was educated at Glenalmond, 1883-85, and entered the Worcester Regiment as 2nd lieutenant, 22 August, 1888. He became lieutenant of the Dorset Regiment, 8 March, 1890; lieutenant in the Indian Staff Corps, 19 July 1891, becoming captain, 22 August 1899. He served in Chitral with the Relief Force, 1895; on the North-West Frontier of India, 1897-8, taking part in the operations in the Samara and in the Kurram Valley, August-September, 1897; and the operations of the flying column in the Kurram Valley, 20 August-1 October, 1897; two clasps. He was also in the Tirah campaign, 1897-8, fighting at Chagru Kotal and Dargai, the capture of Sampagha and Arhanga Passes, the reconnaissance of the Saran Sar and the action of 9 November, 1897. He was also in the operations in the Waran Valley, and the action of 16 November 1897: mentioned in despatches, London Gazette, 5 April 1888; clasp. He became a major in the 15th Sikhs, on 22 August 1906. This distinguished regiment, in which Captain Wimberley's second son has been surgeon for over thirteen years, was raised by Major Patrick Gordon of the Cairnfield family.
