Another new feature in the church is the canopy over the font, which is given by Mrs Clunes in memory of Flora Helen Celeste Gabell and of Mary Elizabeth Cottle. It was designed by Mr Prothero, on the lines of the famous Well at Antwerp, by Quentin Matsys; but in this case the whole of the upper part consists of boughs covered with roses and their leaves, worked in hammered iron by Messrs Letheren. At the summit of the canopy stands a figure of the Good Shepherd, surrounded by rays of glory, which for the present is only executed in oak; eventually it is to be cast in copper. This beautiful work adds great dignity to the font.
