W. WARD WHITTARD Mrs. Margaret Lucy Elizabeth Ward Whittard, of 6, Lansdown-crescent, Cheltenham, whose death took place in hospital on Sunday, was one of the older generation who devoted passionate interest to the cause of animals. Anything that had their well-being at heart, and in particular any movement for the alleviation of suffering, was certain of her wholehearted support. Over a great number of years she gave devoted service to the R.S.P.C.A. both actively and by generous contribution to funds. She was, too, a frequent contributor to the correspondence columns of the "Echo" in appeals against thoughtless cruelty to animals, and the conditions under which pit ponies lived and the overloading of cart horses were subjects which never failed to secure her championship. Daughter of the late Rev. A. C. Gabell, for a long period the Rector of Swindon, near Cheltenham, she was the second wife of Mr. William Ward Whittard, who died in 1946 at the age of 92. ▶Moved to Pittville from: Moved from Pittville to: The Vicarage, Leigh near Cheltenham ▶Date of death: 1 May 1949 Place of death: The Rainbow Nursing Home, St. George’s Street, Cheltenham ▶Date of burial: 5 May 1949 Place of burial: A funeral service was held at St. James’ Church, Cheltenham followed by cremation. ▶Notes: ID: 3298 Contributor(s): David Drinkwater
