Lifestory: Edward was the fifth son of Abraham Spooner Lillingston of Birmingham (the surname Lillingston was added in 1797), and his wife Elizabeth Mary, daughter and heir of Luke Lillingston,  of Ferriby Grange, Yorkshire. Edward Lillingston matriculated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1831, BA 1836, MA 1856. He was ordained Deacon (Rochester) in 1835, and Priest (Norwich) in 1837. He married Elizabeth Marjory, second daughter of Adam Gordon Esq., of Cairnfield, in 1836 (they had three sons).

He served as the Curate of St Margaret, Ipswich, by 1840 until 1841 as Curate of Hampton-in-Arden, Warwickshire, and from 1841 until 1842 was Curate of Arradoul by Buckie, Banffshire; he was also Chaplain to the Duchess of Gordon. He was appointed Perpetual Curate and Lecturer of All Saints, Derby 1843-8 (see Hugh Pearson), and Perpetual Curate of St George’s Chapel, Edgbaston 1849-64.

After the death of his first wife in 1841 he married again, in 1845, to Lydia, eldest daughter of the Revd. Ley Brooks, of the Friary, Lichfield (they had three sons). Lillingston was a popular preacher, and a volume of his Sermons delivered at All Saints’, Derby was published in 1849. From Edgbaston he moved to Ross House (now the Clarence Court Hotel), Clarence Square in Pittville as Minister of Holy Trinity, succeeding the Revd. Gordon Calthrop, until his death in 1875, at the age of sixty-three. His wealth at death was sworn at under £35,000.
