He matriculated at Queens’ College, Cambridge in 1835, and the following year migrated to Jesus College, BA (senior optime) 1839. At this point he travelled out to Jamaica, where he was ordained Deacon in 1840, and was licensed Curate of St James’, Jamaica. He returned home to be ordained Priest (Winchester) in 1841. In 1844 he married Ellena Gratiana, second daughter of Henry Campbell White Esq. at St Helier, Jersey. Initially he was Curate of the Town Church in Jersey, and was appointed Perpetual Curate of St Mark’s, St Helier 1847-68, where in 1851 he lived at Mount View; in 1861 the family, including one son and one daughter, lived at 6 Clarendon Lodge, St Helier. In 1868 he was presented with the living as Vicar of Hucclecote, and remained there until 1900; the parish became distinct from Churchdown in 1851. In 1876 he accepted a temporary appointment at the Anglican Episcopal Embassy at Paris; his wife died very shortly after their arrival there. Returning to Britain, in 1878 he married again, to Mona Frances Caroline, eldest daughter of St. George H. Stock, formerly of the 2nd (Queen’s) Royals, of Kilbride, Co. Mayo, and 51 Tavistock Crescent, London; they had five more children. In 1900, an amiable, popular clergyman, he tendered his resignation at Hucclecote and moved to Cheltenham, now a widower, and lived with his children (four daughters and one son, all born in Hucclecote), at Wellesley Court (now divided into Wellesley and the Clarence Court Hotel), Clarence Square, Pittville.
